Patients often need to take morphine to manage their postoperative pain. Researchers at University of Ottawa Spine Program, The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa, ON, Canada found that taking 2 grams of vitamin C or ascorbic acid per day reduced use of morphine, meaning that vitamin C may help ease postoperative pain.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant known to help fight oxidative stress and maintain the activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes when the host is challenged with oxidants such as free radicals generated by radiation. Oxidative stress along with inflammation may be responsible for all sorts of chronic diseases and health conditions. Supplementation with antioxidants like vitamin C can help prevent cells/tissue from being damaged.
